On October 25, 2018 at approximately 10:31 AM, Monterey Police Officers were dispatched to the Hunter’s Supply sporting goods store at 2260 North Fremont Street in Monterey in regards to a theft of a firearm. Store employees reported a subject entered the store and asked to view a handgun. Upon receiving the handgun, the subject fled the store with it. During the course of the theft, a store employee who was in lawful possession of a firearm discharged their firearm one time however no one was struck.
On October 05, 2018, at approximately 11:50 p.m., a subject was recorded on video surveillance trying to break into a residence in the 900 block of Casanova, Monterey.
Formed in 2005, the Peninsula Cold Case Project (PCCP) is a collaboration between local, state and federal law enforcement partners, the Department of Justice, and the Monterey County District Attorney’s Office. The mission of the PCCP is to close unsolved homicides and this regional investigative effort has resulted in a number of homicide case closures including the 1998 abduction and homicide of 13-year-old Christina Williams. Recently PCCP members were honored by the California Peace Officers’ Association with the 2017 Outstanding Cold Case award for their work on the Christina Williams case which resulted in the filing of criminal charges against her killer.
The Peninsula Cold Case Project will be holding a press conference at 9:00AM on October 2nd 2018 to announce the identification of a suspect in a cold case homicide. The location of the press conference will be at the Monterey Emergency Operations Center located behind the Monterey Police Department at 351 Madison Street, Monterey.
On 9/11/18, Monterey Police Detectives booked 60-years-old Daniel Piggott of Monterey into the Monterey County Jail for charges which included; manufacturing an assault weapon, possession of an assault weapon, possession of high capacity magazines, negligent discharge of a firearm and discharge of a firearm in a school zone. The investigation stemming from the incident on 9/7/18 revealed that Piggott was responsible for the original shots fired call. Evidence recovered at the scene indicated that Piggott had fired multiple rounds, several of which struck a wall on a patio that was adjacent to his apartment.
