In 2020, the City of Monterey is celebrating the 250th anniversary of its founding in 1770. The Monterey City Council has chosen a 15-foot abalone sculpture to commemorate this historic milestone. San Carlos Beach Park was picked as the location for the ceramic tile artwork and it will be unveiled in June of 2020. News Release in PDF
At the October 15, 2019 City Council Regular Meeting, the City Council, staff, and members of the public discussed the immediate and long-term budget challenges facing the City, and the exploration of a fiscal emergency declaration. Over the last week, Monterey Peninsula law enforcement agencies have been dispatched to an increasing number of calls related to overdoses of counterfeit drugs suspected of containing fentanyl. Since Friday, October 18, 2019, the past several days, law enforcement has been made aware of five overdoses on the peninsula. It is suspected there are additional unreported overdoses. During the course of the investigation into the armed robbery on 10/7/19, the Monterey Police Department located photos of the two suspects involved. The department is seeking the public’s assistance in identifying these individuals.
