Zip Books

Need a book the Library doesn't own?

Thanks to funding from the California Library Services Act, the Library is able to purchase books or books-on-cd via and have them shipped to your house. The rules are slightly relaxed due to the COVID19 pandemic. (scroll to the bottom of this page for the regular rules).

To take advantage of the Zip Book program you must have a valid Monterey Public or Pacific Grove Library card. We are currently able to purchase bestsellers, but now that we offer curbside pickup, we will no longer order items the Library already owns. We can only purchase up to 3 copies of a single title, first come, first served. We are unable to purchase items on preorder.

  1. Verify the item you want is available from for less than $50
  2. Fill out the form below. Please limit yourself to one request per week.
  3. Staff will review the request and send you an email update within 1 week.
  4. If your Zip Book is approved, the order will be placed with Amazon and the item will be shipped to your house. Please note that Amazon is currently experiencing shipping delays.
  5. Zip Books can be kept until the inside of the Library is reopened, but you are welcome to return them earlier via our curbside pickup desk. Once the inside of the Library is open, please bring Zip Books to the desk and let the staff member know it was a Zip Book. Zip Books do not have specific due dates, but when the program is back to running according to its regular guidelines, you will not be able to request a new Zip Book until all your previous requests have been returned to the Library.


How it works when the Library is not temporarily closed:

  1. Search the catalog  to verify Monterey and Pacific Grove Libraries don't own the book or book-on-cd.
  2. Is the book available for sale on for less than $50? Is the book-on-cd available from for less than $75? If so, fill out the form below. The price and ISBN should be available in the information.
  3. One Zip Book request per person at a time. We review Zip Book requests a couple times a week, and if approved, the book will be mailed to your house, so verify your address below. If you provided an email address, you will receive a confirmation when the item is ordered.
  4.  Please return it to the Library Help Desk within six weeks. Please do not return it in the book drop, as you will not receive credit for the return and you will have to pay the price of the item to use the Zip Book service again. When you return your book, you are welcome to request another, with a maximum three requests per month.
  5. Zip Books are not renewable, but they don't accrue late fees. You may return your Zip Book beyond the due date, but you will not be able to request a new Zip Book until it is returned.
  6. Books that are current bestsellers or very popular may be referred to our Purchase Suggestion form here. Books in other languages or Playaway request are welcome if they are available from Amazon. Out of print books may be requested if they meet the criteria. DVDs and eBooks are not available through the Zip Book program.
