Yes. As in the Library, you just need to bring an ID and something that verifies your address, to get a card.
The Bookmobile is 30 feet long, 8’ 5” wide, and 11’6” high. It holds approximately 2000 books, DVDs, CDs, audiobooks, and magazines.
Books, DVDs, magazines etc. stay on the Bookmobile for approximately three months. The collection is constantly being rotated, in order to provide new materials for customers. For example, items added to the Bookmobile collection in January will be taken off in April. Items put on the Bookmobile in February will be taken off in May. About a third of the collection is rotated off each month, when new items to replace them are put on board. So, at any time, one third of the collection is new and nothing is more than three months old.
If you are unable to return your items to the Bookmobile when they are due, you can go to www.montereylibrary.org to access your account to renew your items, or you can renew on our automated phone renewal system at (831) 646-5681.
If the Bookmobile experiences mechanical difficulties, usually Library staff will bring a small selection of books in a City of Monterey car or van. We are happy to pick up your books at that time. If there is a holiday, or some problem prevents us from coming in a substitute vehicle, no fines would be assessed until AFTER your next stop.
Yes. On the Bookmobile you can return items that are from the Main Library on Pacific Street, and/or items checked out from the Pacific Grove Library.
Most stops the Bookmobile visits weekly. Others are every third week.

Our choice for a Bookmobile stop is influenced by various factors including: distance from the Library, population density, and mobility issues of customers. For example, at The Park Lane, the residents are older adults, many of whom are no longer able to drive to the Library.
Please let us know if you would like the Bookmobile to stop in your neighborhood. We review our schedule periodically, and if it meets the criteria, and we have the funding for it, we would consider changing the schedule to include your neighborhood.
When you see an item in the catalog that you would like, click on REQUEST. After entering your library card number and password, you will be asked where you want to pick it up. Click on the arrow to see the drop down menu, and then click on BOOKMOBILE. A new box will appear that shows all the stops. Click on yours and submit.
We’d like for the Bookmobile to participate in community events whenever possible. Special events are evaluated based on safety, space, visibility, available staff time, and Library goals. To request the Bookmobile for your event, contact the Bookmobile Coordinator or fill out this form and mail or email it to the Library.
