FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
RIBBON CUTTING FOR LITTLE FREE LIBRARY
Monterey Public Library will hold a ribbon cutting for a new Little Free Library at Casanova Oak Knoll Park, 735 Ramona Avenue, Monterey on Wednesday, September 5, at 4 p.m. The Little Free Library is one of 4 book distribution structures built by Stevenson School Junior Shaan Patel over the summer to satisfy his Eagle Scout requirement. His Boy Scout Troop #43 assisted.
The Friends of the Monterey Public Library provided the funds. Kelly-Moor Paints in Seaside donated the paint, and Home Depot in Sand City gave Patel a $200 in credit to keep him under budget. One structure was donated to MYMuseum, the other three were donated to the Monterey Public Library and installed in City Parks. The other two locations are Laguna Grande Park along Virgin Avenue and the Spray Avenue Tot Lot at 132 Spray Avenue in Monterey.
Community members can borrow a book, and bring it back when they are finished. No fines are charged, and no library card is needed. "We are thrilled to have three more free book distribution sites in the City" said Inga Waite, Library Director. The Friends of the Library installed a Little Free Library at Via Paraiso Park in 2015, and gave a second one to Monterey Public Library in 2017, which is installed at Montecito Park. "Studies show that children who grow up with books in their home, do better in school, and give back to their communities" Waite said. These little libraries ensure that kids of all ages have access to books even when the Library is closed."
Donations of children’s books for the Free Little Libraries can be brought to Monterey Public Library.
Monterey Public Library is located at 625 Pacific Street, Monterey.
Casanova Oak Knoll Park is located at 735 Ramona Avenue, Monterey.
