The Friends of the Monterey Public Library presents the West Coast premiere of Dan Albert’s Paella/La paella de Daniel Alberta 35-minute documentary film based on the stories and archival materials gathered from Spanish immigrant families in Monterey, on Friday, June 7, at the Monterey Conference Center.  Monterey residents featured in the film are Dan Albert, Emilio Cal, Frank Campos, Bob Martin, Theresa Longueira Petersen, Elena Longueira Young and Andy Gonzales. This is the pilot program for a larger film project that traces Spanish immigration to the United States from 1880 to 1930.  

Before the film enjoy Dan Albert’s mother’s paella recipe prepared by Monterey Marriott Executive Chef Willi Franz and culinary staff at the Monterey Mariott Hotel, or enjoy a glass of sangria and view photographs from Spanish immigrant families who settled in Monterey at the Monterey Conference Center. 

Dinner, Reception and Film Tickets: $45 per person in advance/$50 per person after June 1. Reservation deadline: June 3. Choice of Shellfish or Chicken Paella served with salad, dessert and complimentary Spanish wines. 5:00 p.m. Reception (cash bar), 5:30 p.m. Paella Dinner, Monterey Marriott Hotel, 350 Calle Principal, Monterey, CA.

Film and Reception Tickets: $15 per person in advance/$20 per person at the door.  6:00 p.m. Sangria Reception, Steinbeck Lobby; 7:00-8:30 p.m. Film and Program, Steinbeck Forum, Monterey Conference Center, 1 Portola Plaza, Monterey CA.

The directors of Dan Albert’s Paella/La paella de Daniel Albert are James D. Fernandez, Collegiate Professor in the Department of Spanish and Portuguese at New York University, and Luis Argeo, a journalist and documentary filmmaker based in Gijon, Asturias, Spain. More information about their film is available at
