In this novel, which spans the period from 1915 to 1985, we meet Addie Baum who tells the story of her interesting life and times to her grand-daughter. The daughter of Russian Jewish immigrants, Addie, is curious and intelligent, eager to assimilate, learn, and experience life, despite her mother’s abusiveness and both parents’ mistrust of all things American. Addie negotiates her life in Boston through trial and error, and against all odds becomes a successful, self-actualized woman.
This is good storytelling and is recommended for book groups as good fodder for discussion.
