08/19/2020: Arrest - Manufacturing a "Zip Gun"

On Monday, August 17, 2020 at approximately 9:48 a.m., the Monterey Police Department was advised that Alan Smith, a 38-years old male, of Monterey had manufactured a “zip gun” and possessed ammunition. The City of Monterey and Monterey Police Department (MPD) anticipated increased visitors and traffic issues related to Car Week and the increasing temperatures. The MPD assigned off-duty officers to work the weekend on overtime to assist in addressing these issues. NEWS RELEASE IN PDF

In 2019, MPD saw an increase of speed related violations during car week. MPD issued 109 citations, towed 13 vehicles and arrested three individuals for speed related violations during car week.

Although there are no sanctioned car week events in Monterey due to the COVID19 pandemic, the MPD has increased patrol staffing to address vehicle and speed related issues. On Thursday, August 13, 2020, MPD officers issued 14 citations for speed related violations. NEWS RELEASE IN PDF

08/13/2020: Recent Burglaries, Attempted Burglaries and Burglary Arrest

On August 8, 2020 at approximately 12:45 a.m., Monterey Police Officers were dispatched to a report of a residential burglary in progress in the 300 block of Hannon Avenue. The occupants of the residence reported waking up to find an unknown subject inside the residence. The suspect was later described as slender, approximately 5-08 tall, possibly male, wearing dark clothing. NEWS RELEASE IN PDF

On July 27, 2020, Richard Thompson, age 39 of Seaside was involved in two physical altercations that were separated by approximately seven hours in the City of Monterey. Thompson suffered injuries in both altercations and was treated at local hospitals after both incidents. After being treated and released after the first incident, Thompson was involved in the second incident, where he was burglarizing a local business. On August 10, 2020, Thompson died while in the hospital where he had been since the second incident. Thompson’s death was ruled a homicide by the Monterey County Coroner’s Office. The Monterey Police Department (MPD) investigated both incidents and arrested the subject that assaulted Thompson in the first incident, for assault with a deadly weapon. The Monterey County District Attorney’s Office will determine what charges will be filed in relation to the two incidents. More specific details follow. NEWS RELEASE IN PDF
