In 2020, the City of Monterey is celebrating the 250th anniversary of its founding in 1770. The Monterey City Council has chosen a 15-foot abalone sculpture to commemorate this historic milestone. San Carlos Beach Park was picked as the location for the ceramic tile artwork and it will be unveiled in June of 2020. News Release in PDF
In partnership with the City of Monterey and other local agencies, the Monterey County Convention and Visitors Bureau created a comprehensive Monterey Car Week packet of resources along with a guide to the events. Monterey Car Week, August 9 – 18, is one of the biggest annual events on the Peninsula. With tens of thousands of visitors expected, traffic and parking will be impacted. The program is airing on the Monterey Channel (Comcast Cable Ch 25) on Friday evenings at 7 p.m. and 930 p.m.; Saturday afternoons at 2 p.m.; and Sunday mornings at 7 a.m.
ORIGINAL POST ON JUNE 5, 2019: The community is invited to a public informational session hosted by the City of Monterey and Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary (MBNMS). A panel of representatives from multiple agencies with regulatory oversight authority over cruise ship operations will present information, answer question cards from the public, and address environmental concerns related to large cruise ships visiting Monterey Bay.

The City of Monterey, Monterey Fire and Police Departments, and the Presidio of Monterey are planning a test of an emergency evacuation route for the public through the Presidio from Pine Street to High Street gates. On Saturday, April 13th from 9:00 to 11:00 a.m. residents will have an opportunity to use the travel route to test the mechanics of a potential evacuation through the Presidio of Monterey.
