The recent strong earthquakes that hit the Ridgecrest area in Southern California are a good reminder that we all live in earthquake country. Many earthquake faults run through or near the Monterey Peninsula. The Monterey Fire Department would like to remind people that, while we may not know when the next earthquake will happen, we can do things to be prepared. A list of recommended actions on what to do before, during, and after an earthquake is available at ready.gov/earthquakes, as well as on the City’s website at monterey.org/emergency. The City of Monterey and the City of Pacific Grove solidified a new fire contract agreement with the respective approvals of the Monterey and Pacific Grove City Councils at coinciding Special City Council meetings on June 26, 2019. The two Cities have been in partnership for fire services since 2008, at which time Monterey hired all Pacific Grove Firefighters and integrated them into the Monterey Fire Department. The new fire services agreement terms are for eight years, plus another five-year option by mutual agreement of the Cities. NEWS RELEASE IN PDF
The Monterey Fire Department will begin conducting fire safety inspections on June 17, 2019, for all homes in areas at risk for a wildland fire within the cities of Monterey, Pacific Grove, Carmel, and Sand City. This inspection is done on an annual basis to help minimize the spread and growth of a wildland fire and reduce the potential loss of homes in such an event. New this year, inspection personnel will leave a notice at the home indicating the inspection was completed and what, if any, corrective actions should be taken by the homeowner/occupant. The notices will be in the form of a self-adhesive sticker left on or near the door (see example).
