08/13/2020: Recent Burglaries, Attempted Burglaries and Burglary Arrest

On August 8, 2020 at approximately 12:45 a.m., Monterey Police Officers were dispatched to a report of a residential burglary in progress in the 300 block of Hannon Avenue. The occupants of the residence reported waking up to find an unknown subject inside the residence. The suspect was later described as slender, approximately 5-08 tall, possibly male, wearing dark clothing. NEWS RELEASE IN PDF

08/13/2020: Monterey City Council to Discuss Crowd Management for Fisherman's Wharf During Special Meeting Wednesday

 The Monterey City Council will be holding a special meeting on Wednesday, August 19 at 4:15 p.m. to discuss physical distancing and crowd management for Municipal Wharf 1, also known as Fisherman’s Wharf.  In response to the reported increase in the number of patrons to the popular dining, retail, and recreational destination, the City Council will consider potential solutions that may be able to reduce overcrowding on the wharf. 08/13/2020: Homicide

On July 27, 2020, Richard Thompson, age 39 of Seaside was involved in two physical altercations that were separated by approximately seven hours in the City of Monterey. Thompson suffered injuries in both altercations and was treated at local hospitals after both incidents. After being treated and released after the first incident, Thompson was involved in the second incident, where he was burglarizing a local business. On August 10, 2020, Thompson died while in the hospital where he had been since the second incident. Thompson’s death was ruled a homicide by the Monterey County Coroner’s Office. The Monterey Police Department (MPD) investigated both incidents and arrested the subject that assaulted Thompson in the first incident, for assault with a deadly weapon. The Monterey County District Attorney’s Office will determine what charges will be filed in relation to the two incidents. More specific details follow. NEWS RELEASE IN PDF

08/03/2020: Sister City Tainan, Taiwan Donates Medical Masks and Goggles to Monterey

A City of Monterey sister city since 1984, Tainan, Taiwan, reached out to the City of Monterey with concern over the significant spread of the coronavirus in the United States and graciously donated 2,900 medical masks and 300 medical goggles. The supplies arrived at Monterey City Hall on Tuesday, July 28, 2020. They will be added to inventory in the Emergency Operations Center (EOC), shared with City first responders including Police and Fire, as well as other staff, and may also be shared with other community first responders as needed.
