The Monterey Fire Department wants to reassure residents that they are fully staffed and ready to respond as needed to any situation that warrants their services. The current local River Fire and Carmel Fire have both brought concerns and anxiety to residents. The Monterey Fire Department serves Monterey, Pacific Grove, Carmel-by-the-Sea, Sand City, Naval Postgraduate School, La Mesa Village and Monterey Regional Airport, and is ready in all of those areas should a need arise. The City of Monterey and Monterey Police Department (MPD) anticipated increased visitors and traffic issues related to Car Week and the increasing temperatures. The MPD assigned off-duty officers to work the weekend on overtime to assist in addressing these issues. NEWS RELEASE IN PDF

08/14/2020: Partial Beach Closures Issued for San Carlos and McAbee Beaches for August 15 and 16

The City of Monterey today announced a partial beach closure for San Carlos and McAbee beaches on Saturday, August 15 and Sunday, August 16, 2020.  The partial beach closure will allow for essential activity only, including ocean access, but prohibits sunbathing, lounging and group activities. This temporary measure provides additional health and safety assurance during the COVID-19 pandemic emergency shelter in place order, particularly on Monterey’s smaller beaches. 08/14/2020: Car Week Traffic Enforcement

In 2019, MPD saw an increase of speed related violations during car week. MPD issued 109 citations, towed 13 vehicles and arrested three individuals for speed related violations during car week.

Although there are no sanctioned car week events in Monterey due to the COVID19 pandemic, the MPD has increased patrol staffing to address vehicle and speed related issues. On Thursday, August 13, 2020, MPD officers issued 14 citations for speed related violations. NEWS RELEASE IN PDF
