HOW TO RECYCLE YOUR BOTTLES AND CANS

Option 1: Curbside! Just add your bottles and cans to your household or apartment recycling container. Don't have a curbside recycling container? Call Monterey City Disposal Service to order a free one at (831) 372-7977. Curbside recycling helps keep your garbage rates low.

Option 2: Take your bottles and cans to one of the local BuyBack centers where they will "buy" your containers back from you and refund your California Redemption Value (or CRV). FIND A BUYBACK CENTER (Note: The search works best if you click "Advanced Search" and search by City or County rather than using zip code.)

WHAT IS CRV AND WHERE CAN I GET CASH FOR BOTTLES AND CANS?

CRV stands for California Redemption Value and it is the deposit you pay when you buy soft drinks, juices, water, beer and more (More on the CRV program)

You pay a 5¢ deposit for containers with 24 ounces or less and a 10¢ deposit for containers 25 ounces or more. These charges are collected at the store register when you buy your beverages. To redeem the deposits you have paid, visit any one of the convenient Buyback Centers. Search for local Buyback Locations.

If you would prefer not to drop off your recyclables, recycle your cans, bottles and other recyclables in your curbside bin. In Monterey, your curbside recycling is FREE - you only pay for trash. The hauler uses the value of the CRV containers and other commodities such as paper and cardboard to offset expenses such as landfill disposal and operational costs.

Report Recycling Theft
It is against the law for people to take recyclables out of curbside containers. Call the City of Monterey Police Department, (831) 646-3914 to report theft immediately, or fill out the report form online. Please note day, time, and other information such as license plate numbers or physical descriptions.

WHY RECYCLE BOTTLES AND CANS?
Recycled drinking containers made from glass, aluminum, or plastic and other commodities such as paper and cardboard, can be made into new products and even new bottles and cans. Recycling reduces the amount of precious natural resources needed to make these products using raw materials and can be done using less energy. Recycling reduces energy consumption.

Here are some examples:

• One ton of plastic containers made with recycled material saves over 7,000 kilowatt hours.
• Recycling one can saves enough energy to run your computer for 3 hours.
• Recycling one ton of glass saves energy equal to nine barrels of petroleum.
• Recycling protects our environment.
• Recycling reduces green house gas emissions, reduces dangerous air pollutants and helps keep our water supplies clean.
