Bicyclist along the Recreation Trail
In October 2019, Monterey became an official part of a national network of bike paths that runs from San Diego to Seattle. A resolution recently passed by the Monterey City Council designates portions of existing trails and streets through the city as part of the U.S. Bicycle Route 95. Route 95 mirrors the Coast Highway. In doing so, the City Council aims to “promote … the vision to make Monterey a city where alternative forms of transportation are so attractive that the use of an automobile is a choice, not a necessity.”
Bicycling Magazine ranked the Coastal Recreation Trail one of the "The Best Bike Paths in California."
Here are maps of Downtown and New Monterey showing the bike rack locations. They are also available as a layer on the interactive GIS Map available at http://gisags8.ci.monterey.ca.us/pub/wtppub/. Check out monterey.org/GIS for more interactive maps.
