11/02/2018: Sexual Abuse of a Child Arrest

On October 17, 2018, the Monterey Police Department (MPD) received a report of an adult who had engaged in unlawful sexual acts with a minor. The 12 years-old female victim reported a variety of sexual activity with an adult suspect. Detectives later identified the suspect as 26 year old Robert Gomez of Kingsburg, California. During the investigation, MPD Detectives obtained an arrest warrant for Gomez.

11/01/2018: Marijuana Business Robbery

On 10/05/18 at 11:20 PM Monterey Police Officers were dispatched to a report of an armed robbery of an unlicensed marijuana distribution business on Harris Court in Monterey. Business employees reported three males wearing masks and armed with handguns entered the business and stole marijuana, cash, and other items before fleeing. The suspects fled in an unknown direction and were not located.

10/26/2018: Firearm Theft and Arrest

On October 25, 2018 at approximately 10:31 AM, Monterey Police Officers were dispatched to the Hunter’s Supply sporting goods store at 2260 North Fremont Street in Monterey in regards to a theft of a firearm. Store employees reported a subject entered the store and asked to view a handgun. Upon receiving the handgun, the subject fled the store with it. During the course of the theft, a store employee who was in lawful possession of a firearm discharged their firearm one time however no one was struck.

10/24/2018: Registration for Winter/Spring Activities

Monterey Recreation is now taking registration for Winter/Spring programs. A variety of recreational activities are designed to appeal to all members of the family. Tiny tots are invited to participate in indoor programs that offer art, dance, music and movement. Gymnastics, music, ballet, art, after school programs and outdoor sports activities are just a few of the programs offered for youth. There are also numerous classes for teenagers, adults and seniors.

Accessibility Improvements Completed on Colton Hall

Accessibility Improvements Completed on Colton Hall

For the first time in its 169 year history, Colton Hall is accessible to visitors with special needs. The City of Monterey has completed a $353,000 improvement project, which includes a reconstruction of the back stairs and deck, a new stair lift to provide Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) access to the second floor, a new ADA compliant restroom that can accommodate a wheelchair, an access ramp in the rear courtyard, and an adjacent ADA parking area. 10/04/2018: Resurfacing of Major Streets Happening Now, Thanks to Measure P

Measure P funded road resurfacing work is happening on major streets including Del Monte Avenue, Pacific Street, Camino Aguajito and Camino El Estero. Locals are encouraged to avoid those streets and instead travel across town via Franklin or Pearl, Munras to Abrego, or Figueroa or Sloat during this work. Crews will do their best to minimize traffic impacts by performing some of the work at night and by avoiding peak commute hours as much as possible. Drivers should expect traffic control and use extra caution in construction zones.

10/02/2018: Cold Case Project: Khalik Kennedy Homicide Suspect Identified

Formed in 2005, the Peninsula Cold Case Project (PCCP) is a collaboration between local, state and federal law enforcement partners, the Department of Justice, and the Monterey County District Attorney’s Office. The mission of the PCCP is to close unsolved homicides and this regional investigative effort has resulted in a number of homicide case closures including the 1998 abduction and homicide of 13-year-old Christina Williams. Recently PCCP members were honored by the California Peace Officers’ Association with the 2017 Outstanding Cold Case award for their work on the Christina Williams case which resulted in the filing of criminal charges against her killer.
