09/06/2018: Measure P Third Year Cumulative Report Outlines Progress with Streets, Sidewalks, Storm Drains

Measure P, the one percent special tax approved by 74% of the voters in November 2014, and in effect from April 1, 2015 through March 31, 2019, is now into the final year of implementation. For the past two years, the City of Monterey has published an annual report to let the community know the progress of work that’s been accomplished. The third year cumulative report is now available in print at public city offices, and alongside past reports online at www.monterey.org/fixingstreets.

NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN that the City of Monterey has prepared a Negative Declaration, pursuant to the requirements of CEQA, for the Garden Road Zone Amendment.

The proposed Negative Declaration and Initial Study, as well as referenced documents, are available for review at the City of Monterey, Planning Office, Colton Hall, 1st Floor, 570 Pacific Street, Monterey, CA 93940 and on the City website at: www.monterey.org/planning.  In accordance with time limits mandated by State law, written comments on this Negative Declaration and Initial Study will be accepted from:

09/01/2018: Carjacking and Attempted Murder

On 9/1/18 at approximately 8:54 PM Monterey Police Officers were dispatched to a carjacking and shots fired in the area of Encina Avenue and Virgin Avenue in Monterey. The victim reported he was standing outside his vehicle when he was approached by two suspects who demanded his keys. One of the suspects struck the victim in the face and the other suspect pointed a handgun at the victim. The victim gave the suspects the keys to his vehicle and the victim fled.

08/29/2018: Monterey Conference Center Generates Over $16 Million in Economic Impact in First Six Months of 2018

It’s been eight months since the January 2018 grand opening celebration for the $60 million renovation of the Monterey Conference Center. The City of Monterey is tracking the economic impact created by the recent renovation. From January through June 2018, the Conference Center hosted 30 different groups representing over 24,000 room nights and generating over $16 million in local economic impact. That equates to over $4 million in hotel room revenue. During the past 6 months, the Conference Center exceeded its 12 month revenue estimate by almost $50,000.

In partnership with the City of Monterey and other local agencies, the Monterey County Convention and Visitors Bureau created a comprehensive Monterey Car Week packet of resources along with a guide to the events. Monterey Car Week, August 18 – 26, is one of the biggest annual events on the Peninsula. With tens of thousands of visitors expected, traffic and parking will be impacted.

08/09/2018: Lai Hired as New Finance Director

City Manager Hans Uslar today announced the hiring of Ms. Lauren Lai as the new City of Monterey Finance Director.  This executive position became vacant after former Finance Director Julie Porter retired in March 2018.  The City’s recruitment attracted many qualified applicants from California and out of state.
