The City of Monterey will be installing Touchless Pedestrian Push Buttons at the four signalized intersections on North Fremont Street. This new touchless pedestrian button technology will be the first of its kind installed in the City as well as in Monterey County. The installation of this technology was funded by the Transportation Agency for Monterey County (TAMC)’s Regional Surface Transportation (RSTP) Grant Funds. NEWS RELEASE IN PDF

California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) congratulated the City of Monterey Public Works Department on winning the 2020 Caltrans Excellence in Transportation award in the Transportation-Related Facilities category for the North Fremont Bicycle and Pedestrian Access and Safety Improvement Project. Caltrans received entries from across the state, including entries from local and public agencies, private contractors, consultants and Caltrans. The City of Monterey has been awarded a $40,000 grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety (OTS) for Pedestrian and Bicycle Safety Education.
The one-year grant is for the 2021 federal fiscal year, which runs from October 1, 2020 to September 30, 2021. The City of Monterey will use the funding as part of the City’s ongoing commitment to keep our roadways safe and improve the quality of life through education, enforcement and engineering. The City of Monterey Parking Division announced today an expanded contactless smart parking payment system on Cannery Row and adjacent streets (see map) powered by the ParkMobile App. The ParkMobile App was launched in December 2019 in the Downtown and Waterfront areas to improve service and convenience. The expanded service adds another 500 app-enabled spaces at street meters to the nearly 1,500 spaces in off-street lots around the City. NEWS RELEASE IN PDF

Paid parking is back! Due to the COVID-19 pandemic and to comply with the resulting Monterey County Shelter in Place order, the Parking Division suspended paid parking enforcement in mid-March. The Parking Division is transitioning back to paid parking on June 1st, 2020 as more people begin utilizing city lots and on-street parking. NEWS RELEASE

At the May 19 City Council Meeting, Monterey City Council adopted a resolution declaring “National Public Works Week” from May 17-23. The Monterey Conference Center in July 2019 completed installation of 330 solar panels on the new facility, bringing it a step closer to being designated a Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certified facility.
