In 2020, the City of Monterey is celebrating the 250th anniversary of its founding in 1770. The Monterey City Council has chosen a 15-foot abalone sculpture to commemorate this historic milestone. San Carlos Beach Park was picked as the location for the ceramic tile artwork and it will be unveiled in June of 2020. News Release in PDF

At the October 15, 2019 City Council Regular Meeting, the City Council, staff, and members of the public discussed the immediate and long-term budget challenges facing the City, and the exploration of a fiscal emergency declaration. A declaration of fiscal emergency would allow a general transactions and use tax (“sales tax”) to be included on the March 3, 2020 special election. NEWS RELEASE IN PDF

Over the last week, Monterey Peninsula law enforcement agencies have been dispatched to an increasing number of calls related to overdoses of counterfeit drugs suspected of containing fentanyl. Since Friday, October 18, 2019, the past several days, law enforcement has been made aware of five overdoses on the peninsula. It is suspected there are additional unreported overdoses. During the course of the investigation into the armed robbery on 10/7/19, the Monterey Police Department located photos of the two suspects involved. The department is seeking the public’s assistance in identifying these individuals.
Anyone with information on the identity of these suspects is encourage to contact Detective Zook at 831-646-3810. Or to remain anonymous call (831) 646-3840.

On 10/07/19 at 9:47 PM Monterey Police Officers were dispatched to a report of an armed robbery that occurred in the area of Beach Way and Spray Avenue. Two victims reported they were walking together on foot through the area when they were confronted by two male suspects. One of the suspects was armed with a handgun which was passed back and forth between the two suspects. The suspects stole personal items belonging to the victims and fled in one of the victims’ cars. The stolen car was later recovered unoccupied by the Monterey County Sheriff’s Office on Canario Street in Salinas. NEWS RELEASE IN PDF

In April and August of 2019, several Monterey businesses were burglarized and the suspects stole lottery scratchers. During the same time, other businesses in Monterey County were burglarized wherein the suspects took lottery tickets. NEWS RELEASE IN PDF
