A major $1.8 million project will improve traffic flow and safety in Monterey’s biggest and most popular parking lot. Starting November 19, the City of Monterey will begin construction on the Waterfront Attendant Lot #1 between Washington Street and Old Fisherman’s Wharf. NEWS RELEASE IN PDF

Monterey Recreation is now taking registration for Winter/Spring programs. A variety of recreational activities are designed to appeal to all members of the family. Tiny tots are invited to participate in indoor programs that offer art, dance, music and movement. Gymnastics, music, ballet, art, after school programs and outdoor sports activities are just a few of the programs offered for youth. There are also numerous classes for teenagers, adults and seniors.

For the first time in its 169 year history, Colton Hall is accessible to visitors with special needs. The City of Monterey has completed a $353,000 improvement project, which includes a reconstruction of the back stairs and deck, a new stair lift to provide Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) access to the second floor, a new ADA compliant restroom that can accommodate a wheelchair, an access ramp in the rear courtyard, and an adjacent ADA parking area. The Cooper Molera Adobe project has been nominated for a Route Fifty Navigator Award, honoring “innovation in best practices in state and local government.” Fifty finalists were named for their “demonstrated abilities to implement a great idea that improves public sector services and the communities they serve.” NEWS RELEASE IN PDF

It’s been eight months since the January 2018 grand opening celebration for the $60 million renovation of the Monterey Conference Center. The City of Monterey is tracking the economic impact created by the recent renovation. From January through June 2018, the Conference Center hosted 30 different groups representing over 24,000 room nights and generating over $16 million in local economic impact. That equates to over $4 million in hotel room revenue. During the past 6 months, the Conference Center exceeded its 12 month revenue estimate by almost $50,000.

The Monterey Sports Center invites the public to a free lecture, Healthy Cognitive Aging, by research psychologist, Dr. Quinn Kennedy, on Saturday, September 8 at 1:30 p.m. in Studio 1. Learn about adult cognitive aging and factors that affect older adults’ decision making and performance.

In partnership with the City of Monterey and other local agencies, the Monterey County Convention and Visitors Bureau created a comprehensive Monterey Car Week packet of resources along with a guide to the events. Monterey Car Week, August 18 – 26, is one of the biggest annual events on the Peninsula. With tens of thousands of visitors expected, traffic and parking will be impacted.

City Manager Hans Uslar today announced the hiring of Ms. Lauren Lai as the new City of Monterey Finance Director. This executive position became vacant after former Finance Director Julie Porter retired in March 2018. The City’s recruitment attracted many qualified applicants from California and out of state.
