Purpose |
Homework Helpers assist staff as
part of the Library’s after-school academic enrichment program. This program
helps kids succeed in school by providing homework assistance and enrichment
programs to kindergarten through 5th grade students, individually and in
groups. |

Duties |
Homework Helpers help students with
homework by doing one or more of the following: Reading aloud; being a
resource person and discussing ideas and concepts; practicing spelling,
reviewing vocabulary and math; with assistance of librarians, prepare
supplementary materials such as flash cards; provide one-to-one homework
assistance; provide guidance in acquiring materials for assignments.
Volunteers do not do homework for students, but help them to do it
themselves. Establish rapport and learn about special interests and
abilities of students; work with librarians and Bookmobile staff to provide
materials and teach techniques for using library resources. Keep simple
records
of volunteer and student time and materials. Assist with occasional surveys
and evaluations. Attend scheduled training sessions. Provide own
transportation. Provide students with enjoyable reading material by working
with librarians and Homework Helpers Coordinator to help select materials.

Qualifications |
The idea Homework Helper is a
flexible, patient person who enjoys working with children, reads
expressively, and understands basic math and reading. Prior teaching
experience or second language is desirable but not required. Homework Pals
are required to submit to a background check and are fingerprinted. |

Training |
An initial 8- hour training is
given, with ongoing training provided. |

Time
Commitment |
2-hours per week minimum, with a
4 month commitment. |
