Harbor Kelp Gardener Volunteer

Service Area Monterey Harbor/ Marina
Purpose To assist in the mapping, collecting and monitoring of the invasive kelp Undaria pinnatifida
Duties Level One: How you can help  (PDF) Topside Volunteers wanted (PDF) Systematically locating, mapping and monitoring this invasive species by means of observation using a dockside Aqua-Vu finder. Assisting scuba dive teams as dockside safety observers during the collection process.

Level Two: Volunteer divers wanted (PDF)
Underwater locating and collection of invasive species by certified
recreational or commercial scuba divers with a scientific background or experience in collection methods and filing dive plans.

Qualifications Level One:
Good coordination and dexterity. Ability to lift and carry up to 35 lbs., able to work comfortably in a marine environment including the ability to swim.

Level Two:
Current recreational or commercial scuba diving certification. First-aid and CPR certificates helpful. Previous experience with scientific collecting desired.

Time  Commitment Initial training meeting, and two to three hours per week during winter and spring. Weekday and weekend shifts available.
