Community Survey 2001 - Comprehensive Summary
Page 2 of 2

A total of 786 citizens responded to this year’s survey, sent out in the City Focus. Four issues were addressed in ten questions:

Citizens are generally supportive of pursuing the development of affordable housing (77%), but are divided on the issue of investing resources in housing for public employees. The development of for-sale housing was more strongly favored in outlying areas. Written comments frequently addressed the Fort Ord property.

The majority of citizens know the difference between storm drains and sewers, and how to dispose of car oil and household waste. Most respondents have smoke detectors and two-thirds check them regularly; as many can be self-sufficient for 72 hours and almost half of the respondents know CPR. Most residents have attended at least one of the July 4th activities presented by the City and the majority of respondents support all of those activities. The majority of written comments were very supportive of these events for the City.

This report summarizes the results for each section.

Stormwater Management

In this section, respondents were asked: Which of the following do you know? Four out of five know the difference between a sewer and storm drain; and how to dispose of car oil and household hazardous waste. Over half know the laws regarding storm drains, though few were familiar with the "dirty words" radio campaign.

Emergency Preparedness

In this section, citizens were asked to: Check those items that apply to your household. Almost nine in 10 have smoke detectors installed, two in three check them regularly and as many can be self-sufficient for
72 hours. Almost half know CPR, about a third have a list
of critical disaster supplies,
a quarter have a set plan for locating family in emergency
and 7% are members of the Neighborhood Emergency Response Team (NERT).

July 4th Activities

This item asked: Which of these events have you viewed or attended? with respect to the July 4th City-provided activities. At some time, three in four have witnessed the fireworks, more than 50% have seen the parade and almost half the lawn party. Only one in eight had never viewed these activities.

The last item asked: Which of these events should the City continue to provide? About three in four support all three activities and only 3% believe the City should not continue any of these activities.

The written comments on July 4th activities were largely favorable and supportive. The minority who had complaints focused on traffic, barking dogs, and trash left on the beach and in the water.

Written comments tend to reflect the range of attitudes expressed above. A prominent theme in the comments, related to affordable housing, is the use and development of land on the Fort Ord property.
