Sustainability

Sustainability is...

development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.

World Commission on Environment and Development
 (Brundtland Commission)

The word "Sustainability" is more than just a fad or a buzz word. Sustainability, in short, means that we should be able to sustain our current environment to last into the future. For humans to live sustainably, the Earth's resources must be used at a rate at which they can be replenished.

There are many ways that individuals and families can be sustainable in their own homes and by new actions. For example, slightly modifying your daily activities make vast impacts in terms of saving energy or conserving in your home.  Most small things you do will not only save you money but will contribute to a more sustainable, healthy environment! Visit the pages listed on the right to find tips to save energy, conserve water, find out about the City's new green building program or even how to calculate your carbon footprint! The pages are full of ideas and simple changes you can make that will have lasting effects.

Why is Sustainability Important?

Sustainability is related to the quality of life in a community. The economic, social and environmental systems that make up the community need to provide a healthy, productive, meaningful life for all community residents, present and future.

A very important balance needs to be achieved between society, the economy and the environment. When each acts independently, they indirectly effect the others, and sometimes in harmful ways. Therefore, the key is to try to plan and participate in actions that are harmonious and connect the three areas.

A view of community as three separate, unrelated parts: an economic part, a social part and an environmental part.
Understanding the three parts and their links is key to understanding sustainability, because sustainability is about more than just quality of life. It is about understanding the connections between and achieving balance among the social, economic, and environmental pieces of a community.

A view of community that shows the links among its three parts: the economic part, the social part and the environmental part.

It may seem like a challenge, but the rewards are immeasurable!
