   Start A Recycling Program

1.
Commit To Recycling
A recycling program needs approval by the school principal and commitment by staff and students.

2. Recycling Coordinator
A Recycling Coordinator is vital to the success of the recycling program.  The Recycling Coordinator should be someone who is enthusiastic and has good communication and organizational skills.  The Recycling Coordinator serves as the point-of-contact between the school and Monterey City Disposal, the waste hauler.  The Recycling Coordinator should be part of the school staff.

3. Designate Placement of Recycling Containers
Designate a specific location for each type of recycling container and require that containers be returned to its designated location after emptying.  Explain to staff and students how to keep mixed paper and cardboard separate from waste, and where various containers are located.

4. Plan How The Recyclable Will Be Moved From Inside Collection Containers To The Outside Dumpster
Each school is responsible for collecting recyclables from inside the school and placing them in the external recycling dumpster.  Determine who (custodian staff, student club, etc.) will collect recyclables from the inside containers in each area of your school, and how and when collection will take place.  A separate plan may be needed for your school cafeteria.  Monterey City Disposal is responsible for the pickup of recyclables from the external recycling dumpster and transporting them to the Recycling Facility.

5. Involve, Train & Motivate Students and Staff
Involve teachers, students, staff and volunteers in recycling.  Where possible, provide incentives such as classroom competitions or integrate recycling into classroom curriculum.

6. Monitor Your Recycling Program
Monitor trash and recycling containers to ensure that recyclables are being placed in the recycling dumpster and not the trash dumpster.  Also, check to ensure that trash is NOT going into the recycling containers.
