About Our Leader, Dick Robins

After college, Dick Robins joined the army and played with the Third Army Band while stationed in Atlanta, Georgia. A one year teaching assignment at an Atlanta high school teaching assignment followed before Robins decided to work towards getting a masters degree and teaching credential at UCLA. While in Los Angeles Dick mastered the bass, played in night spots, and did some studio work.

Once he had his credential in hand, Dick headed to Palm Springs, where he taught junior high school music for three years. Eventually, after a short sojourn back in the Los Angeles area, Dick came north and took over the music program at Carmel High.  The music program at Carmel High had dwindled to about twenty students.  During his 13 year tenure at the school, music was placed back into the regular school day's schedule. The program flourished and grew to the point where 17 percent of the student body was involved in some manner when Dick retired in the late 1990s.

While Dick was at Carmel High, the City of Monterey approached him to become the conductor for the Monterey Community Band. Beginning with about 15 musicians, the band grew to its current core of 35-40 members. In addition to leading the Community Band, Dick is an active musician who performs six to ten gigs a month.  These performances are mainly on the Central Coast and range from Dixieland to classical.
