Monterey Bay Waterfront Park

The Vision - Click on the photo to view a larger imageCompletion of the Window on the Bay/Monterey Bay Waterfront Park remains one of the City’s top priorities. The project continues to allow residents and visitors alike the opportunity to derive more from one of our most precious assets - Monterey Bay.

The City has been negotiating to obtain the remaining privately owned parcels along this waterfront area to create a beautiful entrance to the City, allow for more recreational opportunities and eventually widen and improve access along Del Monte Avenue, Monterey’s main traffic thoroughfare. This is an "opportunity buying" program, requiring a willing seller and an agreement on the value of the property. The City's policy is to not use its powers of condemnation to acquire parkland.

The City's priority vision for this area is well illustrated by two photos. "The Challenge" shows Window on the Bay as photographed in 1998. "The Vision" (above - click on photo for a larger view) is a computer-enhanced photo that shows the landscaped park areas and roadway improvements as projected.
