The City of Monterey Parking Division employs the latest in parking technology by offering Smart Parkcards for use at all of the meters located within the City. No longer will you have to look between your car seat for those extra quarters. The Parkcard, which resembles a phone card, is encoded with a computer chip that enables the public to purchase a pre-determined amount of parking ($10, $25, $50 and $100) for use at the meters. To use it a person inserts the card in the slot on the meter. The meter will first show the amount of credit left on the card and then every couple of seconds 25-cent increments are subtracted. Once the desired time is achieved the card is removed. The card is valid until all the credit has been used up. The cards are nonrefundable and have no expiration date.
