Monterey, CA – For the first time ever, four Tall Ships will visit
Monterey Harbor this summer, giving visitors a glimpse of the
nation’s seafaring past. The ships will be tied up along Wharves I
and II from mid-July through early August. Three of the four
visiting Tall Ships will be open to the public for tours.
The Californian arrives on July 14th at 8:00
a.m. with a cannon salute from shore. The only official Tall Ship
of California, the Californian is a replica of an 1847
Revenue Cutter that enforced federal laws along the coast during the
Gold Rush. Built in San Diego and launched for the 1984 Summer
Olympic Games in Los Angeles, the Californian will be open
for public tours at Fisherman’s Wharf on July 15-16 from 10:00 a.m.
to 4:00 p.m.
The tall ships Lynx and Bounty arrive on July 30th
in Monterey and depart on August 4th. The Lynx is
an interpretation of the privateers that evaded the British naval
fleet and blockaded American ports in the early 1800s. The Bounty
was built for the film “Mutiny on the Bounty” with Marlon Brando in
1960 and recently appeared in “Pirates of the Caribbean – Dead Man’s
Chest” with Johnny Depp. The Lynx and the Bounty will
be open to the public for dockside tours July 31st
through August 3rd. The Lynx is open from 10:00
a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at Fisherman’s Wharf. The Bounty is open
from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. at Wharf 2. Admission to both ships is
$8.00.
Anyone seeking a seafaring outing aboard one of the Tall Ships can
sign up for an adventure sail aboard the Lynx from 2:00 –
5:00 p.m. Adult tickets are $65, children under age 12 are $35.
The Robert C. Seamans arrives in Monterey on July 31st.
The 134-foot steel brigantine is an oceanographic / research sailing
school vessel. It is swapping crews in Monterey and may be open to
the public while docked at Wharf 2 from Aug 1-7.
