Under a proposed agreement to be considered by the Pacific Grove
City Council on Wednesday, October 1, and by the Monterey City
Council on Tuesday, October 7, the City of Monterey will provide
fire and emergency medical services to Pacific Grove beginning
December 16, 2008.
The proposed agreement is the culmination of joint discussions and
planning begun in early 2005 and supported by a Fire Services
Consolidation Feasibility Analysis conducted by Citygate Associates,
LLC in 2007. Under the terms of the agreement, existing Pacific
Grove firefighters will become City of Monterey employees, and the
City of Monterey will provide all fire and emergency medical
services to the City of Pacific Grove by contract.
The proposed agreement will maintain existing services in Pacific
Grove, and add enhanced operational flexibility, depth of resources,
and administrative support for both cities. It will also enable both
cities to deliver fire and related emergency services more
effectively and economically into the future as a single
organization rather than two separate departments.
The combined department will staff five (5) apparatus daily at four
(4) stations, including the existing Pacific Grove station, and will
also offer specialized services such as marine fire and rescue,
urban search and rescue, and hazardous material response. A total of
67 employees will operate under a single unified command and
administrative organizational structure based in Monterey.
