MONTEREY CITY COUNCIL
SETS VISION AND STRATEGIC PRIORITIES
Monterey,
CA – The Monterey City Council has created a new Vision for the
future of the City that will guide its efforts in the years ahead. During a series of working sessions from March 2 through June 19,
2007, the Council hammered out and adopted its
Vision,
Mission,
Value Drivers and
Strategic Initiatives. For the first time in 20
years, the Council penned a new Vision for Monterey:
Monterey is committed to being a model
city for its quality of life driven by responsiveness of local
government, historical and cultural preservation, mobility
opportunities emphasizing pedestrians over vehicles, economic
sustainability, a strong sense of place and good stewardship of the
natural environment.
With a vision of
becoming a “model city,” the Council crafted its Mission:
The Monterey City
Council will provide visionary policy and legislative leadership
that assures a safe, healthy and economically vibrant community.

The
Council adopted seven Value Drivers that will serve as the
cornerstones of its work. The Value Drivers express the Council’s
commitment to the community.

From
the value drivers flow a series of Strategic Initiatives that
set priorities for the Council and City staff. Many of the
Strategic Initiatives continue the work of previous City Councils on
priority projects, such as Window-on-the-Bay. Some of the Strategic
Initiatives are new priorities, such as:
- establishing standards and incentives for
sustainability in new construction and remodels (“Green Initiative”)
-
developing recommendations for a
condominium conversion policy
-
developing policy and framework for
meeting Areas of Special Biological Significance (ASBS) regulations
-
expanding the economic value of DLI, NPS
and other federal activities
-
integrating the Community Development and
Public Works departments
