Mayor's
presentation of original
Constitutional Convention
documents at
Colton Hall. Monday,
February 15, 2010, 11 a.m.

During the Gold Rush in
1849, rapid population
growth highlighted the need
for a more stable
government. General Bennett
Riley called for a
convention to be held at
Colton Hall. As delegates
began arriving on September
1, they signed a roster
giving their names, where
they were from, the
districts they represented,
and their ages. At the end
of the Convention on October
13, they prepared a
signature page for the
Constitution.The City of
Monterey recently acquired
these two historic documents
for permanent display in
Colton Hall. You are invited
to witness their unveiling
on Presidents' Day.
Unfortunately, the second
floor of Colton Hall is not
wheelchair accessible. |
