Summary:
The
Monterey City Council authorized creation of a special "donations fund" to collect money for storm-ravaged communities Bay St. Louis and Waveland in Mississippi. These communities are home to the Naval Oceanographic Office which is a sister operation to our own Fleet Numerical Meteorology and Oceanography Center. In addition, Monterey also shares other common traits with these communities – our coastal locations and tourism industries. These towns are 35 miles east of New Orleans (see map), with a combined population of around 14,000.
By establishing a partnership and calling attention to the plight of this specific community, we are providing Monterey Peninsula community members and organizations an opportunity to make a personal connection with the area devastated by Hurricane Katrina and at the same time aid in the restoration of a critical national research center. Recovery will be long and challenging, but through this partnership we can journey alongside.

How does this partnership support our community?
Should we get the chance to work with these towns, this would provide an excellent hands-on, cost-effective opportunity for our staff to learn about disaster recovery. This also helps cement professional relationships that are beneficial to our community when we need emergency support. In addition, it would provide staff development activities – our employees will come back more seasoned and experienced, which will not only benefit our community when we have to deal with an emergency but will also strengthen our staff skills set and support ongoing work programs.

January 2006 - Fund/Partnership update
Fund details update – More than $3,500 has been collected through the City of Monterey Bay St. Louis-Waveland Donations Fund and earmarked to support the disaster recover efforts in Waveland and Bay St. Louis, MS. At this time, funds have not been designated for any specific use, as both communities are still in the clean-up stages as outlined in the briefing below. Funds will be sent on a yet-to-be-determined basis.
December 2005 - Monterey Team Visits Mississippi Partner Cities
A Monterey team toured Waveland and Bay St. Louis in early December, some 70 days after Hurricane Katrina hit, to touch base with our partner communities.
Volunteers Mary and Ken Wright, who are coordinating our community partnership effort, and Monterey Fire Chief Greg Glass visited as representatives of Monterey to make contacts with city leadership and check in on disaster relief progress. Their mission was to assess community needs and determine specifically if Monterey could be of any assistance regarding providing professional city services such as engineering, planning or building safety inspection support at this time.
During the visit, both of the cities physically remained in disarray. It appeared as if the storm had just ended. "I can't imagine what they must have looked like right after the storm," Chief Glass said. "Our team witnessed a very chaotic disaster scene – acres and acres of destruction, including boats still sitting in streets and refuse everywhere."
It is clear at this time, both cities are still in the clean-up stage and are not able to utilize professional services. There are organizations already on site assisting with clean up and debris removal. We will continue to check in with Waveland and Bay St. Louis leadership to monitor the progress and see if and when Monterey can send professional assistance.
