Selection Process

Submit Application
A City of Monterey application is required and must be accompanied by a supplemental questionnaire indicating your status as a Lateral candidate, Academy Graduate, Academic Attendee, or Trainee.

Written Exam
The written exam will be waived for Lateral candidates, Academy Graduates, candidate currently attending a P.O.S.T. approved academy, and any candidate who submits proof of a P.O.S.T. test T-score of 50 or above that was acquired within the last 12 months from date of application. Written exam will be scheduled for all other candidates after review of application.

Physical Agility Exam
The physical agility exam will be waived for Lateral candidates, Academy Graduates, and candidates currently attending a P.O.S.T. approved academy. Trainees will have a physical agility exam scheduled after review of application.

Oral Board Examination
If desired by the candidate, when submitting an application to Human Resources in person, Later candidates, Academy Graduates, and Academy Attendees can expect to have an oral board interview on the same day if oral board panel members are available, otherwise it will be scheduled by the Human Resources Department. Trainee candidates will have an interview scheduled after successful completion of the physical agility and/or written exam.

Chief's Interview
If the Chief is available, each candidate who successfully passes the Oral Board Examination can expect to have a Chief's interview.

Background Investigation
Upon the Chief's review, candidates may enter the background investigation phase of the process.
