Laterals
Currently employed or formerly employed as a law enforcement officer with the past three years from the date of application in a California law enforcement agency and possess a California P.O.S.T. Basic Certificate. (Out-of-state applicants with similar experience and similar certification may need California P.O.S.T. "refresher" course before being hired as a Lateral candidate.)
Academy Graduates
Completion of a Basic P.O.S.T. Academy within the past three (3) years of the date of application.
Academy Attendees
Currently enrolled in a Basic P.O.S.T. Academy.
Trainees
High school graduation equivalency or GED. Trainee candidates selected will be paid an hourly rate while attending the Basic P.O.S.T. Academy. Trainees are considered part-time employees with only mandatory benefits as required by law and do not have peace officer status while attending the Academy. Upon graduation/full-time employment as a Police Officer, the trainee will receive a monthly salary with full benefits.
