Officer of the Year
2006 Officer of the Year: Amy Carrizosa
The men and women of the Monterey Police Department are proud to select Police Officer Amy Carrizosa as the Police Officer of the Year for 2006. Amy was assigned to Investigations that, by end of 2006, became an army of one because of staffing shortages.
She rose to the challenge handling a caseload meant for four detectives, represented the Police Department at regional meetings, managed mandatory sex and narcotics registrations and being on-call for months. She possesses outstanding investigation skills and is an asset to our Department.
There are two cases that stand out as examples of why Amy is our Police Officer of the Year. The first involved a man looking at child pornography on City computers at a Senior Center. Amy recognized the suspect as a person required to register as a sex offender in the City of Monterey. She called the suspect to the station and obtained a confession that led to the service of six search warrants on a variety of computers.
The amount of child pornography and Internet activity on the hard drives was so significant that the FBI took over the case. The suspect was transferred to the Federal Justice system and in not expected to be free for a very long time.
The second case involved the arrest of a suspect responsible for hundreds of residential, vehicle and commercial burglaries on the Monterey Peninsula. No police agency was able to locate and arrest him. Amy was able to contact the suspect’s girlfriend and established a rapport that resulted in the suspect turning himself into Amy at the Police Department.
Not only did the suspect admit to numerous crimes, he also brought stolen property with him to the station, told Amy where to find more and after bailing out, continued to return property to Amy until he was remanded to custody where he will spend many years in prison.
These are two examples of Amy skills and dedication to the law enforcement profession. She deserves recognition as an outstanding officer and the MPD Officer of the Year.
