Keeping Your Children Safe

  • Talk to your children about safety
  • Work on, "what would you do if.." scenarios
  • Practice by using role playing
  • Know your child’s route to school
  • Check it out with your child and point out places to avoid
  • Point out safe houses your child could go to in the case of trouble
  • Prevent your child from being alone in public places
  • When walking to school always use the buddy system
  • If there is no one you know at the park, go home
  • If there are people at the park that make you uncomfortable, leave
  • Do not be out after dark without an adult
  • It is easy to get separated at stores, mall, and amusement centers
  • Do not let them go to public restrooms alone
  • If your child does get separated, make sure they know what to do
  • Know where your children are
  • Parents should know where their children are going, how they are getting there, and when they are returning
  • Children need to let you know before they go anywhere else
  • Meet the parents before you allow them to play at friend’s houses
  • When your child is home alone
  • Post a list of important telephone numbers to include 911
  • Children should never open the door for a stranger
  • Children should never tell a caller they are alone
