Keeping Your Children Safe
- Talk to your children about safety
- Work on, "what would you do if.." scenarios
- Practice by using role playing
- Know your child’s route to school
- Check it out with your child and point out places to avoid
- Point out safe houses your child could go to in the case of trouble
- Prevent your child from being alone in public places
- When walking to school always use the buddy system
- If there is no one you know at the park, go home
- If there are people at the park that make you uncomfortable, leave
- Do not be out after dark without an adult
- It is easy to get separated at stores, mall, and amusement centers
- Do not let them go to public restrooms alone
- If your child does get separated, make sure they know what to do
- Know where your children are
- Parents should know where their children are going, how they are getting there, and when they are returning
- Children need to let you know before they go anywhere else
- Meet the parents before you allow them to play at friend’s houses
- When your child is home alone
- Post a list of important telephone numbers to include 911
- Children should never open the door for a stranger
- Children should never tell a caller they are alone
