802.11b/g (Wi-Fi) wireless Internet access is available in most areas of the Library. The Library provides wireless service to expand access to Internet information sources and services, including the Library catalog and databases. All you need to log in is a laptop with a wireless card or another Wi-Fi device.
About the wireless network
The wireless network is connected to the Internet through the City of Monterey's high-speed I-Net.
To protect your privacy and prevent spamming, you will not be able to use email client software (Outlook, Eudora, Thunderbird, Mail, etc.) with unsecured email protocols (POP3, SMTP, IMAP) on the wireless network. Your email provider probably also provides Web access to your account. You will not be able to use FTP (file transfer protocol) or file sharing software on the wireless network.
Wireless network users will not be able to access the Library’s printers. To print Web pages, please log into a Library Internet workstation. Because of other customer service responsibilities, Library staff cannot help you set up, configure, or troubleshoot your wireless hardware and software, but Reference Desk staff can suggest books, classes, and other resources that may assist you.
Your privacy and security
The wireless network is not encrypted. Other wireless users may intercept any information you send or receive using the wireless network, and web-based security controls may not be sufficient protection. Therefore, the Library recommends that you do not enter credit card numbers, passwords, or other personally identifiable information.
Other wireless users may also be able to view or change files on your computer. The Library recommends that you install and use anti-virus software, firewall software, and current security patches or upgrades on your computer.
Monterey Public Library's Internet Policy
In order to use Monterey Public Library's Internet service, including the wireless service, you must follow the rules established by the Library Board of Trustees. If you do not follow these rules, you will not be permitted to use the Internet and you may be required to leave the Library.
