Library to Participate in National "Read for the Record" Day

Monterey Public Library will join people across the nation to celebrate Jumpstart's "Read for the Record" Day on Thursday, October 8, by reading Eric Carle's children's classic The Very Hungry Caterpillar. In addition to visiting local preschools that serve two-year-olds to present storytimes featuring the honored book, the Library will host a Caterpillar's Storytime Picnic on the Colton Hall Lawn at 5 p.m.

"Current research overwhelmingly supports the importance of facilitating early and emerging literacy skills in preschool-age children as critical foundation for literacy development," said Karen Brown, Youth Services Manager for the Monterey Public Library. "Read for the Record" is a national campaign designed to break the world record for the largest shared reading experience ever, while working to break the cycle of illiteracy.  It is sponsored by Jumpstart in a non-profit organization dedicated to ensure that all children in America enter school prepared to succeed.

The Caterpillar's Storytime Picnic is free of charge and all ages are invited to attend.  The Colton Hall Lawn is located on Pacific Street, between Jefferson and Madison Streets, in Monterey. For more information contact Karen Brown at 831.646.3744 or visit www.monterey.org/library/kids
