The Monterey Public Library will suspend Interlibrary Loan (ILL) services beginning July 15, 2009 for an indefinite time period. No ILL requests will be accepted from customers or from other libraries after this date. Library staff will instead refer customers to other libraries or sources for information requested. Any ILL requests received by July 14, 2009 at 5 p.m. will be processed as usual.
Loans and deliveries between Monterey Public Library and Pacific Grove Public Library will not be affected by this change.
This decision was made based on budget cuts and staff reductions. "ILL service is a valuable library service that has traditionally provided community members access to materials owned by other libraries and agencies that are not held in their own library's collection, and that are beyond the limitations of a library collection budget," explained Library Director Kim Bui-Burton. "While the Internet has now tremendously expanded that access beyond what a library could offer in the pre-online era, we realize that ILL service has continued to be important to many Monterey Public Library customers, and this decision was made with regret and apology."
