Monterey Public Library Budget and Services Update – 7/9/09

The City Council has approved the City of Monterey budget for July 1 2009 through June 30 2010. 

By special Council action, supported by one-time Neighborhood Improvement Program (NIP) funds, the following services and programs have been restored:

  • The Youth Services Librarian and Youth activities and programs

  • Sunday open hours (1 to 5 p.m.) and a seven-day-week Library schedule, resuming Sunday, July 19

  • Three part-time staff positions are no longer to be laid-off; one full-time reduced position will be at 30 hours instead of 20 hours

Other information

  • 30% cut to budget for books, databases and other Library materials; Friends of the Monterey Public Library fundraising events essential to support growing community demand for Library books and other materials

  • Friends also sponsoring limited restoration of three-program “Stories for Adults” series and two adult poetry workshops

  • Interlibrary Loan service suspended indefinitely beginning July 15, 2009.  Items that are in the  catalog that Monterey Public Library shares with Pacific Grove may continued to be borrowed, as usual.
