DELIGHTS

The
Library has delighted audiences with its
“Stories for Adults” programs for over
23 years. Storytelling is one of man’s
oldest traditions and its importance,
historically and culturally, is
immeasurable. Storytellers draw from a
wide range of sources ranging from
history, folklore, literature, and
personal narrative. Listeners come away
enlightened by the wit and wisdom of
various cultures and with insight to
various points of view on a range of
ideas, issues, and interests. Unlike
when we tell our stories in
conversation, professional storytellers
make use of a literary language which
promotes an appreciation for language
and literature. Story listeners are
often inspired by the storyteller’s
subject matter, to make additional use
of library resources to delve in to
further reading or self-directed
learning. Audiences who enjoy “Stories
for Adults” at the Library regard these
events as an opportunity to gather as a
community and enjoy a shared experience.
Storytelling informs, enlightens,
entertains, builds community and
it delights! Mark
your calendar for upcoming
“Stories for
Adults" and prepare to be delighted! |

EDUCATES

Members of the baby boom
generation (individuals born between 1946-1964)
were back in school at the Library in May
attending a three part course entitled “Boomer
Education 101.” Led by Dr. Robert Petty of the
Alliance on Aging, the course is designed to
help members of the boomer generation prepare
for major changes in their lives as they
approach age 65. As it turns out, there is a lot
to learn. Participants learned about Medicare
benefits, including when and how to sign up;
Social Security, the program's relationship with
Medicare, and how it works if you're still
employed or retired after age 65; Long-Term care
insurance, and more. The series is part of the
Monterey Public Library’s one-year State funded
initiative “Transforming Life After Fifty” which
focuses on engaging local baby boomers and
serving their needs. Thanks to programming
partnerships with agencies such as the
Alliance
on Aging, boomers in Monterey can feel better
prepared for the many benefits of aging.

This
summer we will all have a chance to view
original artwork by our favorite
illustrators of children’s books. The
Monterey Public Library is partnering
with the
Monterey Museum of Art to make their
new exhibit “Over Rainbows and Down
Rabbit Holes: The Art of Children's
Books“ free to everyone with a library
card. The exhibit will be on view
Saturday, July 11 through Sunday,
September 13 at MMA La Mirada. “Free
with your library card” bookmark-style
passes will be available at the Library,
and the Youth Services area will have
displays of the featured books. On July
9, there will be a special program for
children at the Library with stories and
art activities related to some of the 70
illustrations in the show.
