Over
the past 10 years, the Library's "Shades of
Monterey" project has collected over 1,200
photographs of day-to-day life in Monterey over
the past century from the albums of local
families. These photos have been the subject of
three exhibits at the Monterey Conference
Center, they are prominently displayed
throughout the Library and have been added to
the historic photo archive in the Library's
California History Room. The purpose of
the project is to provide visual documentation
of how the people of Monterey have lived so as
to preserve our community memory. The Library is
now laying the groundwork, for collecting
additional photos, pending approval of funding
sources. This time we hope to intensify
outreach efforts in Monterey's diverse
communities, and delving more deeply into the
narrative aspect of the stories that are
collected with the photographs. Community
memory is about you and your family and how you
figure into our local history. Watch for
announcement of future "Shades and Stories"
activities and get involved! |

DELIGHTS

Within
a few short months, the Library’s new
Bookmobile will be rolling into town.
Farber Specialty Vehicles is building it
at their production plant in Columbus,
Ohio. It will be six feet longer than
the current vehicle and will have some
wonderful features to make your visit to
the Bookmobile even more enjoyable. For
easier accessibility, the vehicle has an
extra low floor and, instead of stairs,
a fold out ramp. Once on board, you will
find a little of everything the Library
has to offer, including public access to
the Internet! Solar panels are being
installed to provide green power for the
lights and computers. The Bookmobile’s
arrival will be celebrated with a
special party and you’re all invited.
Please watch for announcement of the big
day! |

Summer
is over, but the fun is just beginning!
Unadulterated free time may be a thing
of the past for Monterey’s teens come
September, but new sights and activities
are enticing the after school crowd in a
big way. The first stop for many is the
Teen Zone’s brand-new magnetic poetry
wall. The wall now changes several times
a day, and is fast becoming a fixture in
the Library. And don’t think it’s just
the kids getting involved. Adults are
enjoying the wall so much we’re
considering adding a second one
upstairs!
Another offering new to the school year
is Wednesday afternoon Chill Time. Local
teens are reaping the benefits of early
dismissal each Wednesday, hurrying down
to the Library to enjoy free sodas,
board games, music, video games, and the
use of our Community Room. The response
has been huge, and Monterey’s teens are
thrilled that their Library is an
engaging place to be.
