Monterey Public Library and Pacific Grove Public Library share a computer system with a combined database of holdings. This expands access to library materials for customers of both libraries, and makes the most efficient use of community tax dollars.

The two libraries continue to be separately funded by their respective jurisdictions and operate under separate policies and procedures.

Loan Period
All materials are checked out for 2 weeks.

Renewals
Materials borrowed from Monterey Public Library, Monterey’s Bookmobile, or Pacific Grove Public Library may be renewed at any location, by using the Automated Telephone Renewal System (831.646.5681), or online via the Library’s Catalog.

All Monterey Public Library & Bookmobile items, except those which are on hold, are renewable up to 2 times.
 
All Pacific Grove Public Library items, except videos, kits, equipment, magazines and items which are on hold, are renewable up to 2 times

Returning Materials
All materials borrowed from Monterey Public Library, Monterey’s Bookmobile or Pacific Grove Public Library may be returned at any location.

Holds
You may place a hold on items which are checked out, so they will be available to you once they are returned. You may also designate your preferred pick-up location for holds.

There is no fee to hold an item.

Fines for Overdue Materials
Overdue fines may be paid at any location or online. Fines are based on the policy of the library which owns the overdue item.

Monterey Public Library & Bookmobile materials are $.50/day for adult materials, with a $10 maximum per item;
youth and teen materials are $.25/day, with a $5.00 maximum per item.
 
Pacific Grove Public Library materials are $.25/day for all materials, $5.00 maximum.

Lost/Damaged Materials
Replacement charges for most materials are governed by library policy and for most is are based on the cost of the item plus a $10 processing fee. The replacement cost for adult magazines is $8; youth and teen magazines are $5. The replacement cost of adult paperbacks is $9; youth and teen paperbacks are $6.

Access to Library Materials
The Library provides equal access to materials and resources, including the Internet, to people of all ages. As a parent, it is your responsibility to monitor your child's selection and use of library materials and resources.

Confidentiality of Library Records
California law (Section 6267 of the Government Code) gives all library customers the right to keep their library borrowing records private. The Library will not release information on what is checked out on your library card to anyone but you, even if you are a minor.


Information about Personal Identification Numbers (PINs):

You may renew library materials online by accessing the Library Catalog. Follow these instructions:

  1. Once you have connected to the Catalog, click on the "My Account" link.
  2. Enter your library card #.
  3. If you already have a PIN, enter it. If you have not yet set one, click on the "Don't have a PIN?" link. You can make up any PIN you wish. Enter your new PIN into both of the PIN boxes. Be sure to remember your PIN as you will need it each time you look up your record.
  4. Click on the "Submit" button.
  5. Now your account will now appear on your screen. If you have any items checked out, they will be displayed at the bottom of your screen.
  6. You can renew selected items by clicking in the check box next to each title you wish to renew and then clicking on the "Renew Selected" button.
  7. You can renew all of your items at once by simply clicking on the "Renew All" button.
  8. The word "RENEWED" will appear and the due date will be updated on each item renewed. Note that some items are not renewable.
