The sculpture of the Great Blue Heron came to rest at Lake El Estero as part of the City of Monterey's public art program. The inspiration for the project began several years ago from a Herald photograph of a Blue Heron taking flight from the Lake. The search began for an artist that could create a sculpture that would represent this great bird taking flight from its natural habitat of the lake and its surroundings. The Colton Hall Museum and Cultural Arts Commission received City Council approval and an artist was selected. The sculpture was created and fabricated by local artist Larry Fischer. The piece is made of bronze strengthened with stainless steel, it stands approximately six feet tall and has a wingspan of twelve feet. The total weight of the sculpture is approximately 800 lbs.
