What is Summer Reading?
A free, self-paced program for teens to discover and enjoy all kinds of reading options. Set a goal, earn giveaways, enter our drawings for fabulous prizes, and share your reading experience with others throughout the summer at Library events and online. Our theme for 2011 is Dream Big. We'll be exploring our community, the world, and our place in each.

Who is this for?

Anyone between the ages of 11 and 19 or entering grades 6 through 12. Bring your friends!

When do I start?

The program begins on Saturday, June 9th. You can start sign up and start counting your reading that day. The end-of-summer party on Wednesday, July 25th marks the end of our special events, and the last day to bring in reading logs for prizes is Monday, August 13th.

Where can I sign up?

In the Library On the Bookmobile Print your reading calendar at home and bring it to the Library Fill out the form online and print your own copy of the reading calendar

How do I do it?

  1. Make a decision to make reading a part of your summer and set yourself a goal.

  2. Sign up online, in the Library, or at the Bookmobile. Write your goal on your calendar.

  3. Complete a weekly goal or part of your summer-long goal each week, and mark what you read on your calendar.

  4. Bring the calendar to the Library or the Bookmobile to be entered into our weekly drawings. For each week you have met your goal, you will get one drawing ticket. You can earn extra tickets by participating at events in the Library. You can earn bonus prizes by counting the number of books and hours you read.

Questions?

Q: How much do I have to read?
A: Enough to stretch your brain. After that it is up to you.

Q: How do I enter the drawings for prizes?
A: When you visit the Library or Bookmobile during the summer, show us your reading calendar. We will give you a drawing ticket for each week you have met your goals since your last visit. The tickets will be good for the drawing for the week you visited the Library or Bookmobile.

Q: Can I participate in the youth or adult summer reading programs at Monterey Public Library at the same time?
A: Yes!

Q: If I participate in the teen summer reading program can I go to the summer reading party at the Del Monte Beach on July 25th?
A: Absolutely. You can participate in events for all ages hosted by the Library. Check back on the TeenEvents page for even more events this summer.
