February 23, 2012 Media Contact:  Jeanne McCombs Monterey Public Library, Monterey, California 831.646.3949 / mccombs@ci.monterey.ca.us www.monterey.org/library FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Monterey Public Library presents a facilitated discussion of the book, Farewell to Manzanar by Jeanne Wakatsuki Houston, with an introductory talk by Mas Hashimoto, on Monday, March 19, at 6:30 p.m., in the Library Community Room.  Mr. Hashimoto, a member of the Board of the Watsonville-Santa Cruz Japanese American Citizens League and retired teacher of U.S. History, will speak about his personal experience with the Japanese internment during WWII where his family was detained in Poston, Arizona. Reference Librarian Victor Henry will lead the discussion. California Reads programs are made possible with support from Cal Humanities in partnership with California Center for the Book.  Read the book and join the discussion. February 22, 2012 Media Contact:  Jeanne McCombs Monterey Public Library, Monterey, California 831.646.3949 / mccombs@ci.monterey.ca.us www.monterey.org/library FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE   The Monterey Public Library, in collaboration with the Monterey Peninsula Japanese American Citizens League (JACL), has planned a series of reading and discussion programs as part of California Reads, a program of Cal Humanities Searching for Democracy initiative.  The book A Farewell to Manzanar by Jeanne Wakatsuki Houston, has been chosen for its examination of the theme of democracy, and will be discussed in the Monterey area.  Other titles will be discussed in every region of the state in a wide range of settings (libraries, book festivals and fairs, nonprofits and cultural organizations, bookstores, and educational institutions) from March through November.

Monterey Public Library staff will facilitate a discussion of A Farewell to Manzanar on March 19, at 6:30 p.m., and the author, Jeanne Wakatsuki Houston, will participate in another discussion of the book, at the Monterey Public Library on April 16, at 4 p.m.  Other activities will include an “Open House, Exhibits and Conversation” gathering at the Japanese American Citizens League Hall on April 29, at 1 p.m.  A panel discussion on the topic of Searching for Democracy: WWII and Today will bring together readers, scholars and authors, on May 19, 3 p.m. at the Library. ...

The storyteller will perform the story of her family's time in an internment camp during WWII.  This performance is presented in partnership with the Japanese American Citizens League as part of California Reads; Searching for Democracy.  This intent of this project is to encourage the community to read the memoir Farewell to Manzanar by Jeanne Wakatsuki Houston and participate in activities and discussions focused on the book and issues related to the WWII internment of Japanese Americans. The Friends of the Monterey Public Library and the MPL Endowment Committee present Heart Health - What Do We Need to Know? a lecture presented by Brian Ellinoy, Pharm. D. and Eric "Junai" Fincke, Pharm. D., on Monday, February, 13, from 3 - 4:30 p.m., in the Library Community Room.  The doctors will share insights to helping keep our body's pump in good shape.

CHOCOLATE & WINE TASTING EVENT AT THE LIBRARY

 

The Friends of the Monterey Public Library will hold their annual Chocolate & Wine Tasting Benefit on Friday, February 17, from 7:00 - 9:00 p.m., at the Monterey Public Library.  Guests will sample a wide variety of local wines and enjoy a dazzling array of chocolate treats including cakes, brownies, cupcakes, ice cream, petit fours, fondue, candies, mole and even chocolate beer!  The event includes live music and a silent auction.  All proceeds go to the purchase of books and other resources at the Monterey Public Library.
