Media Contact:  Jeanne McCombs Monterey Public Library, Monterey, California 8331.646.3949 / mccombs@ci.monterey.ca.us www.monterey.org/library FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE On Saturday, October 22, 1 - 2:30 p.m., the Friends of the Monterey Public Library and the MPL Endowment Committee present a screening of the documentary film, "By Light of Lanterns - An Untold History of Monterey's Chinese Fishermen", produced by the CSUMB Teledramatic Arts and Technology Department, followed by a talk by Gerry Low-Sabado.  Geraldine Low-Sabado is a direct descendent of the first Chinese fishermen in Monterey, and one of the few left in the immediate area who has a tie to these early immigrants.  Her mission is to learn more about the amazing contribution her family and other Chinese made in shaping the character of the Monterey Bay area, and to share this information with others.  Contact Gerry for more information about her research and work at RSaturday@aol.com....

There will be several opportunities to participate.  The Library will be hosting two Community Dialogues on Saturday, October 8, the first from 11 a.m. – 12:30 p.m., and the second from  2 – 3:30 p.m, in the Library Community Room.  Additional meetings will be held in the Library on Monday, October 17, from 6 – 7:30 p.m., and on Monday, October 24, from 6 – 7:30 p.m.  You may also take a survey online by visiting the Library’s Web site at www.monterey.org/library or check the Web site for dates and times of other opportunities to take the survey in person.

The Monterey Public Library will provide free one-on-one assistance, on a drop-in basis, for Library customers who wish to learn how to download eBooks from the Northern California Digital Library to their Amazon®Kindle, on Wednesday, October 5, 5:30 – 7:30 p.m.; Saturday, October 8, 12 noon – 2 p.m.; Friday, October 14, 1 – 3 p.m.; and Saturday, October 15, 10:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m.

Kindle users can browse the libraries’ collections of ebooks at http://ncdl.lib.overdrive.com from a PC or Mac, check out titles using a library card, and select “Get for Kindle” to deliver eBooks to their Kindle device or any device running the free Kindle app.

Francesca Ferrari, on Wednesday, October 5, at 6:30 p.m., in the Library Community Room.  Professor Ferrari will discuss the basics of digestion from traditional Chinese Medicine theory and share simplified orthomolecular nutritional information to help you make good food choices.  She is a licensed Acupuncturist and Department Chair of Medical Qigong at Five Branches University, Graduate School of Traditional Chinese Medicine.
