American Food Writing is a spectacular collection of food writing spanning 250 years by writers with distinctive voices and opinions, put together by editor (and food writer in her own right) Molly O’Neill. The works include Ralph Ellison on yams, MFK Fisher on oysters, Russell Baker on franks and beans, Evan Hunter on pancakes, and my very favorite, Henry Ward Beecher’s essay on apple pie. The book contains over 700 pages of entertaining and insightful writing, and recipes are included.
