Meet Lotto and Mathilde, married right out of Vassar at age 22. Lotto’s friends were certain it wouldn’t last, but it does – “until death do us part,” as they say. The marriage works, in part, because the two members of this unlikely couple fall love with one another, but mostly because Mathilde wants it to work. And what Mathilde wants, she makes happen. And if it doesn’t happen, it’s got to be someone else’s fault, and for that, there will be “hell to pay,” as they say.
Lotto is the opposite. He pretty much takes life as it comes. Lucky for him, life goes pretty well. Unbeknownst to him, however, he has two manipulative, determined women making things work out for him in turns - first, his mother, and then Mathilde. This is the story of a marriage, but also of two people who share a life in which one partner knows absolutely nothing about the other. Lotto’s seems to be determined by destiny – like the Greek goddesses, The Fates. Mathilde is more informed by The Furies – goddesses of retribution.
If you have a good handle on Greek mythology and ancient legends, you will better appreciate the many references to them in this story. Either way, this is an engrossing work of literary fiction. Bonus: if you’re in a book club, this would be a very, very, VERY discussible choice for your group.
