Language Line Services
Over-the-phone Interpretation and Document Translation

History
Based in Monterey California, Language Line Services began in 1982 as a volunteer organization with a police officer from San Jose, CA and an instructor from the Defense Language Institute at the Presidio of Monterey providing interpretation for the growing immigrant population in Santa Clara County. The service was incorporated in 1984 and named Communications and Language Line (CALL). In 1989, the company was purchased by AT&T and renamed AT&T Language Line® Services. It was acquired in 1999 by Providence Equity Partners, Inc., and acquired again in 2004 by ABRY Partners, Inc. It is now known as Language Line Services.

Today
Language Line Services remains the leader in providing over-the-phone interpretation from English into more than 150 languages. The service is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. No appointment is necessary.

The company combines the latest in computer telephony technology with a staff of professional linguists who are fully tested and continuously trained to ensure confidentially and cultural accuracy while protecting the integrity of the message.

Insurance, financial, and telecommunication companies to critical care organizations such as hospitals, fire and police departments have come to depend on Language Line Services to facilitate their language needs. Individuals who need to make international travel plan, overseas conference call, or cultivate relationships with new friends have also found Language Line Services to be a quick, easy, and cost effective solution.

In addition to oral interpretation, the company also provides written document translation. Professional translators enable written communication for consumers and businesses alike to be clear, concise, and accurate. An experienced live translator, not machine translation software, is utilized so the accuracy and integrity of your message is conveyed. Translation is available for such documents as forms, agreements, brochures, letters, signage and much more.

Recently Language Line Services has added such services as Language Line® University (training other organizations’ interpreters) the Language Line® Phone (dual handset, quick dial telephone for 3-way interpretation), Language Line® Direct Response (the company’s interpreters take incoming and make outgoing calls for clients), and Language Line® Video Interpreting Service (over-video interpreting for American Sign Language, 24-hours per day).
